What is Contemporary Fiction?
Contemporary fiction is a style of writing that originated around the 1950's. This genre is set in modern times and does not bring in any fantasy or science fiction. The endings of these stories are usually not the typical "happily ever after." The author normally tries to make the story as realistic as possible. The only thing separating contemporary fiction and realistic fiction are the time frames in which the story is set.

How "The Fat Girl" is Contemporary Fiction
The one main reason this story is contemporary fiction is because Louise, the main character, is suffering. Most characters in contemporary stories are troubled, like Lard Ass and Louise. She is ashamed of her weight so much so that she has to eat alone in the middle of the night so nobody, especially her mother, will see and judge her.
